Big Changes May Be Coming to School Zones in West Pines
On December 12, Broward Schools Superintendent Howard Hepburn released recommendations to close or consolidate seven schools county wide, including two in Pembroke Pines as part of the district’s “Redefining Our Schools” plan. The changes are aimed at solving long-standing enrollment declines and classroom underutilization.
Let's break it down.

Here’s What’s Proposed in Pembroke Pines
Panther Run Elementary would close and be merged into Chapel Trail Elementary and Silver Palms Elementary
Palm Cove Elementary would consolidate into Lakeside Elementary and Pines Lakes Elementary
Walter C. Young Middle School boundary would shift west of I-75 to Silver Trail Middle
Flanagan High School boundary west of I-75 would shift to West Broward High
These changes would go into effect for the 2026–27 school year, pending a final vote by the School Board on January 21, 2026.
Why This Matters
These school closures are part of a wider effort to address declining public school enrollment, especially in areas where charter schools have become more competitive.
Boundary shifts west of I-75 could change the perceived desirability of certain neighborhoods especially for families buying based on school zones.
Homes zoned for Chapel Trail Elementary, Silver Trail Middle, or West Broward High could see renewed interest from buyers wanting “known” schools amid the shuffle.
HOA communities near Panther Run and Palm Cove may need to adjust marketing or disclosure language if these changes are approved.
Bottom Line:
As a local real estate professional, here’s my take:
School closures don’t automatically hurt property values but uncertainty can. When buyers aren't sure where their kids will be zoned, they hesitate.
Communities gaining strong schools (like Silver Trail or West Broward) may see increased demand from families in 2026 and beyond. If you're an owner in those zones, this might work in your favor especially if inventory stays tight.
If you’re buying in Pembroke Pines with school zones in mind, this is your heads up to plan ahead. Ask your agent to confirm future assignments, not just current ones. These changes won’t hit until Fall 2026, but smart buyers will start paying attention now.
